A Legacy of Service, Education, and Gratitude

Rafael I. Remis lived a quiet life in Bellingham, but his story spanned continents, military branches, and decades of personal resilience. A Western Washington University alumnus and lifelong learner, Rafael believed deeply in the power of education and in honoring the people who shape us along the way.
The son of a Cuban immigrant father and a Puerto Rican mother, Rafael's early years were marked by hardship. At seventeen, he chose a path of service, beginning a remarkable military career that would take him around the world. Over the course of his life, he served in four different branches of the military: the Marine Corps, Army, Air Force, and Coast Guard. He was stationed in Korea, Japan, England, and throughout the United States. Service defined him not only as a soldier, but as a person.
After his military career, Rafael continued his pursuit of knowledge, studying at several universities before completing his academic journey at Western. He spent his retirement in Bellingham reading, painting, and reflecting. He ultimately recounted his life in his self-published autobiography, Remis: An Autobiography. Though he was a private man, those who knew him understood that his life was marked by perseverance, discipline, and quiet determination.
When Rafael considered how he wished to be remembered, he chose to invest in future students and to honor the woman who shaped his earliest years. Through a thoughtful provision in his will, he left $65,000 to Western to establish the Remis Scholarship Endowment Fund, providing annual scholarships for incoming female students in memory of his late mother.
Because of Rafael's generosity, an incoming student will receive a $2,500 scholarship and may continue to receive this support for up to four years. Once that student graduates and/or is no longer eligible, another incoming student will have the same opportunity. His legacy will open doors for generations of women pursuing their education at Western.
Rafael's life reminds us that a legacy is built not only through what we accomplish during our lifetime, but also through what we choose to set in motion for the future. By including Western in his estate plans, he ensured that his values of service, education, and gratitude will continue to shape lives long after his remarkable journey concluded.
For alumni and friends considering how they might make a lasting difference, a planned gift can be a powerful way to honor loved ones, reflect personal values, and create opportunities for future students, just as Rafael did.
